“My grandfather had chickens…”, isn’t that how all the best tales kick off? Well, he really did! As a little one, I was absolutely enchanted watching him fuss over those feathery pals, though I definitely kept my distance from the wild rooster that ruled the roost!
Now, zoom ahead to my current flock of twelve fabulous ladies, and I can’t get enough of them! I’ve dreamed of having my own chickens, and thanks to moving out of the city, my dreams have finally come true! No turning back now – I’m smitten!
The Originals (OG's)
I started with ten tiny two-day-old chicks. Now, as I write this, we’re enjoying our very first summer with my fabulous laying hens. We welcomed them last July, and this July, I just couldn’t resist adding two more feathery friends to the family!
Let’s talk about the reigning queen of our little flock—’Tiny’! She earned that name because she was the tiniest one among the bunch. When she was a tiny chick, my mornings were quite the adventure as I had to scrub her down since she often she’s pulled an all-nighter snuggled under the chick roost. Oh, those poopy escapades!
In terms of personality, she’s like the boss of the snack kingdom, making sure she gets first dibs on all the yummy treats and leftover goodies. If any brave soul dares to sneak in, she’s there with a peck, reminding them that she’s the queen!
Among my trio of grey girls, she rules the roost and lays pretty blue-green eggs!
My second grey girl is the queen bee of the crew! I call her ‘Cloudy’ because she’s as soft and fluffy as a cloud, perfect for cuddles! With her adorable little afro puff, just like her sister Tiny, she prances around like the boss.
She always makes sure everyone is alert when treats come out, and she’s the last one to waddle into the coop at night, always checking that her pals are safe and snuggled up.
She also lays the most gorgeous blue-green eggs, truth be told they all do! 🤣
Let me introduce you to my fabulous grey girl, ‘Storm’! She’s the sassiest one of the bunch, sporting a sleek look without an afro puff, and she’s got the biggest comb and wattles that would make any hen jealous. People often mistake her for a rooster, but don’t be fooled—she’s a laying machine!
Like her fabulous friends, she lays a stunning blue-green egg. Clearly, I was all about that color-coordination when choosing my first chicks! 😜
Next up is my fabulous feathered friend, ‘Goldie,’ the only chicken strutting around with dazzling golden legs! 🤣
Goldie has the most boisterous squawk that announces my arrival to everyone nearby. She’s a total treat diva, and won’t hesitate to perch in my garden beds, squawking away until I shower her with goodies! It’s all about satisfying her tummy, and she’s the only one brave enough to munch alongside our little queen, Tiny.😳
While her eggs may blend in with the others, they have a unique flair, leaning towards a lovely brownish-green, if that’s even a shade!
My absolute favourite cuddle buddy is my little ‘Speckles!’ She was a dazzling little speckled ball of fluff when she was a chick, and she was always the first one to bounce out of the brooder to be in my hands!
Every morning is an adventure as she zooms towards me for our snuggle time! Her number one snack is cucumbers, and her squawk? Oh boy, it sounds like a hilarious scream! You definitely know when she lays an egg because she gives us her off-key concert announcement!
My next five girls are rocking Kardashian-inspired names—judge all you want! It’s just my playful way of showing them a bit of luxurious love!
Oh, ‘Khloe’. In a previous post, I shared a tale that proves she should have her own reality show. After being left outside during our mad dash to the hospital, this brave chick spent 5 days as the ruler of our back deck, always claiming the highest perch like a feathery queen surveying her domain.
She had a rough start, possibly facing a predator on night one, and lost some tail feathers—but that just adds to her dramatic flair! Thankfully, we found her safe and sound, albeit with a slight case of chicken PTSD. She’s all feathers and no injuries now, but don’t be surprised if she pulls a disappearing act during cuddle sessions.
With the arrival of the newcomers, Khloe has come out of her shell and taken the role of their feathered mentor seriously, showing them around like a seasoned tour guide. Who knew she was so social?
With her striking grey beard and a tail that’s truly a showstopper, she’s also the proud layer of fabulous blue-green eggs!
Meet ‘Kim.’ She’s a delightful mashup of ‘Speckles’ and the twins, but don’t let her looks fool you—she’s got the social standing of a wallflower at a Kardashian party.
Despite her aversion to cuddles, she’s surprisingly generous with the new flock members. Maybe she just needed fresh targets for her teasing! Oh, and by the way, she lays blue-green eggs—did you guess?
Forever in sync, ‘Kylie’ and ‘Kendall’ are practically conjoined twins at this point, and it’s almost amusing to watch. Seriously, I’m still utterly confused about who is who! 🤭 It’s like they have a magical ability to embody each other’s styles flawlessly, and it’s truly a fashion phenomenon to witness.
Known famously as the ‘Green Queens,’ I was banking on getting some fabulous, vibrant green eggs from these two iconic influencers. But hey, if bluish-green tones are in the mix, who am I to argue about subtle colour nuances and variations? After all, when it comes to trends and aesthetics, a little flexibility can go a long way!
‘Kylie’ and ‘Kendall,’ or perhaps ‘Kendall’ and ‘Kylie,’ both possess an egg song so flawless and mesmerizing that even the legendary Mariah Carey might just take notes and be inspired! Their vocal prowess is truly remarkable and sets an incredibly high standard.
These dazzling girls aren’t particularly fans of being held too tightly or cuddled excessively, but they’ll happily supervise my gardening escapades from a distance, all while maintaining an air of glamour and sophistication befitting their diva status. Their watchful eyes make sure I don’t miss a beat in my horticultural endeavors!
Last but definitely not least, ‘Kanye’—yes, yes, I get it, she’s got a guy’s name and is indeed a girl, but let me tell you, she’s rocking a chic, masculine vibe that would make any runway model jealous. Standing out in her own flawless way, she embodies the one-and-only Kanye essence.
She has a flair for the dramatic, laying her eggs later in the day—think early evening glam. I usually swoop in for those exquisite eggs before tucking them in for the night or after I’ve polished off dinner.
Like her fabulous cohorts, she also produces a bluish-green egg.
And now the Newbies
I hadn’t exactly planned to expand my poultry empire—ten chickens already feel like juggling flaming swords; the egg production could start a small breakfast joint! But then, while checking out the latest fuzzy arrivals, I spotted a little chick fighting for life, and it felt like a scene from a sad movie. Cue the waterworks in the Tractor Supply store!
So, guess what? Yep, I brought her home! I figured I could at least give her a comfy nest for her final curtain call, and who knows, maybe I could work some magic and she’d bounce back like a champ. But as I delved into chicken care YouTube videos, reality hit—she needed a partner in crime to survive. I grabbed two more chicks, ‘cause I’m a realist just in case ‘Eleven’ didn’t pull through, and tragically, within 48 hours, she waved goodbye. 😭
And thus, ‘Anna’ and ‘Elsa’ joined the flock, names bestowed by my daughter, because if you’re going to have a dramatic story, you might as well add a Disney twist!
Meet little ‘Anna’, who’s on a fast track to becoming my second favourite. This feathered diva loves to flaunt her aerial prowess, swooping down to say hello the moment my voice hits her ears.
She struts her stuff like a not-so-graceful eagle, sporting a black feathered head that could make a supermodel green with envy. That neck? Oh, it’s as long as her ego and she loves stretching it out for her adoring fans.
Her squawk? More of a honking proclamation! I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see the colour of her eggs. Rumour has it they’re green, but we all know suspense is part of the fun until that first egg makes its grand debut.
And finally, we have ‘Elsa’. I picked another golden girl to keep Anna company. This blonde diva prefers the cozy life, nestled next to Anna like it’s an all-you-can-snuggle buffet. After all, they haven’t braved the coop with the big girls yet!
With her golden feathers gleaming, Elsa’s cool and collected vibe makes her a pro at fitting in with the flock, while poor Anna is left to fend off pecks for being the social butterfly of the group.
Like her partner-in-crime Anna, I’m still waiting to see what her egg colour is. All I know is she was hanging out in the coloured egg bin—what a mystery! 🤷🏽♀️

Join me on my clucky adventure as I juggle mini-farming and the antics of my feathered pals. I’ll dish out my rookie revelations, hilarious wins, and a few epic fails. If you’re a novice chicken wrangler or plotting to add some feathery mischief-makers to your life, hop over to my other chicken escapades here.
If you’re curious about how I juggle gardening with my feathered friends or whip up a chicken-friendly paradise, peck your way over to my garden shenanigans right here.
As with all my posts, I particularly focus on the specific wants and needs of novice pet chicken owners or those who are just getting into the hobby of raising chickens. As a beginner myself, I often found myself on a quest for basic information presented in layman’s terms, or I sought out items and resources that might have seemed ridiculous or unnecessary in the eyes of experienced chicken keepers. It was through this journey that I realized how important it is to have accessible information tailored to those just starting out. My aim is to bridge that gap and provide guidance that can help ease the learning curve for others who share this passion.
